چکیده

In this paper we compute the luminosity function of radio relics. In our calculation we include only those relics that are produced by the compression of former radio cocoons. This compression is provided by shocks that are generated in the process of structure formation. Starting from an analytical model for the luminosity evolution of ageing radio cocoons, the luminosity function of radio galaxies and the statistics of shocks as inferred from cosmological simulations, we are able to make the first estimates of the brightness distribution of radio relics. The computed luminosity function is consistent with current observations and predicts that more than 10 radio relics should be discovered with the upcoming generation of low-frequency radio telescopes. Moreover, we predict that radio relics are predominantly found in low-pressure regions outside the cores of clusters.

Exploring the magnetized cosmic web through low frequency radio emission

Recent improvements in the capabilities of low frequency radio telescopes provide a unique opportunity to study thermal and non-thermal properties of the cosmic web. We argue that the diffuse, polarized emission from giant radio relics traces structure formation shock waves and illuminates the large-scale magnetic field. To show this, we model the population of shockaccelerated relativistic ele...

Radio relics in a cosmological cluster merger simulation

Motivated by the discovery of a number of radio relics we investigate the fate of fossil radio plasma during a merger of clusters of galaxies using cosmological smoothedparticle hydrodynamics simulations. Radio relics are extended, steep-spectrum radio sources that do not seem to be associated with a host galaxy. One proposed scenario whereby these relics form is through the compression of foss...

Recent results on the radio emission from galaxy clusters are reviewed, with emphasis both on the radio galaxies and on the diffuse radio emission from the intracluster medium. We show that the formation of the tailed morphology in cluster radio galaxies is due to the effect of the cluster gaseous environment and of its large scale motions in merging clusters. From Chandra X-ray data, it has al...

1 Cluster Mergers and Diffuse Radio Emission in Abell 2256 and Abell 754

We present deep VLA observations of the galaxy clusters Abell 2256 and Abell 754, both of which appear to be in the violent stage of major cluster merger events. The complex nature of Abell 2256 is revealed through radio images which, in addition to the head-tail galaxies, show two extended, irregular, and sharp-edged regions of diffuse radio emission at the cluster periphery (so called radio r...

Radio Relics in Clusters of Galaxies

In this paper we review the observational results on Relic radio sources in clusters of galaxies. We discuss their observational properties, structures and radio spectra. We will show that Relics can be divided according to their size, morphology, and location in the galaxy cluster. These differences could be related to physical properties of Relic sources. The comparison with cluster condition...
